Shifting danger shown in harsh numbers
The transport sector has seen the highest number of deaths in any Australian industry this year.
New figures from Safe Work Australia show that in the three months to 12 March 2015, 32 Australian workers were killed at work.
The transport industry leads this macabre tally, with 7 fatalities so far.
That number is four less than the figure at the same time last year.
In 2014, the total number of workplace deaths for the transport, postal & warehousing industry was 48.
The dark numbers go even further.
In 2013, 49 per cent of workplace fatalities occurred within the transport, postal & warehousing or agriculture, forestry & fishing industries.
Also in 2013, transport, postal & warehousing had the second highest number of fatalities, hitting a rate of 7.76 fatalities per 100,000 workers.
This is nearly five times the national rate.
Last year, a total of 184 Australian workers were killed while at work.
