Side-burns to seat-backs; hair grows new uses
The ever-increasing human population will push many things to scarcity, but some designers say it will provide them with more advanced materials.
Human hair has appeared as a growing trend for furniture construction, after the launch of an eyebrow-raising new factory.
Azusa Murakami and Alexander Groves of Studio Swine have launched a furniture and homewares collection made by combining human hair with a natural resin.
It is specifically tailored to Chinese needs.
The team says human hair could become an effective alternative to wood in China, as the nation is one of the world’s largest importers of tropical hardwood and the largest exporter of human hair.
“We are interested in the future of resources,” Murakami and Groves told industry press Dezeen.
“Hair is one of the few natural resources that is increasing globally. Hair grows sixteen times faster than the trees used for tropical hardwood which can take 300 years to reach maturity.”
