The Opportunity

Visy has prided itself on being an energy leader amongst its industrial peers with mature approaches to both supply and demand side management. The Energy Specialist role sits within the broader Energy, Waste and Water team, providing general energy support across various different activities such contracting, trading, revenue generation, demand side management and strategy development across a portfolio of AU$300m in spend annually. The role provides specific advice and guidance to the broader group to help educate and influence decisions involving energy consumption and spend.

The Energy Specialist is responsible for continuously improving the cost effectiveness and execution of the Energy business model, striving to deliver optimised physical and financial energy outcomes to Visy’s group of companies across both a short and longer term horizon.

The Role

Reporting to the General Manager – Energy you will be involved in engaging with business stakeholders, assessing their satisfaction through workshops, surveys and other mechanisms, using this output to link with creating enhanced energy strategies as well as lead and Support supplier integration, including the implementation of new contracts and ensuring efficient change management, and managing roll out of new suppliers.

Working strategically towards long-term goals, your key responsibilities will be but not limited to:

  • Provide strategic advice and energy related updates to the broader business including Procurement, General management, Sales, Finance and Operations to align business requirements, processes and strategies
  • Support the development and execution of the long term strategy for Energy Management across Supply and Demand
  • Support the commercial management of Visy’s Energy Portfolio including electricity, natural gas, liquid fuels, environmental certificates and other related areas. This includes sourcing, negotiations, hedging, sales and trading activity
  • Support or Lead sourcing and negotiation activity and provide hedging recommendations
  • Monitor and Analyze wholesale markets, spend information. demand and regulatory changes to identify and formulate new strategies, opportunities and to understand risks
  • Identify, support, and lead “improvement” projects in energy efficiency, demand management/response and behind the meter generation.
  • Complete Energy audits with sites regularly to develop new opportunities and business cases
  • Managing Visy’s short term market participation activities, including daily nominations, trading, storage and transport positions. Seize on arbitrage opportunities

To be considered you must have:

  • Undergraduate degree, preferably with a science, numerical focus, e.g. Engineering, Commerce, Finance or Mathematics
  • Programming Experience for data collection, automation and reporting, preferably in Microsoft Visual Basic
  • Minimum 2 years practical experience in an Energy related area
  • Demonstrated experience in energy analytics and procurement
  • Previous DWGM/STTM trading experience including transport and storage nominations/bidding/balancing
  • Previous experience developing Energy or Utility budgets

Desirable experience across:

  • Experience dealing with global companies
  • Secondary Training and Certification with recognised associations/bodies. E.g. Energy Efficiency Council certifications
  • Packaging industry experience – Pulp and Paper, Plastics, Cardboard, Glass
  • Experience within energy efficiency programmes
  • Experience with Emissions modelling and Reporting
  • Experience with energy products and derivatives
  • Experience with energy auditing and energy project management
