The Role
Defence Science & Technology Group (DSTG) have a position available within its Research Technology and Operations Division. Research Engineering Branch is seeking a Discipline Leader for its Maritime Engineering Discipline based at DST Eveleigh in New South Wales. The Discipline Leader will be responsible for leading a team of engineering professionals and technical officers to deliver advanced novel robotic and autonomous, surfaced and underwater, vehicles and projects to Defence.

The position will be geographically remote from the rest of Research Engineering so will require a self-motivated individual who can operate efficiently with minimum supervision. 

Frequent travel to HMAS Kuttabul Garden Island and HMAS Creswell, Jervis Bay NSW is expected as well as potential to support to open-water field trials. The Discipline Leader will be accountable to plan and manage a range of human, financial and physical resources, and manage strict safety and compliance requirements. They will apply professional, scientific and engineering standards.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Maritime Engineering Discipline within Research Engineering Branch. This team has been established to provide engineering capability to advanced novel robotic and autonomous - surfaced and underwater vehicle research. The Discipline Leader Maritime Engineering will be required to understand project requirements and the maritime domain to determine the skillsets required for your team, and form projects teams accordingly. 
  • Identify any specialised engineering assets or technical machinery that will be required by the team.

Duties:

  • Be a DSTG Professional Engineering Lead for technically complex projects and provide solutions to complex challenges. 
  • Lead a local team of approximately 20 engineering, technical and project staff.
  • Provide maritime engineering program direction to additional off site project managers and engineering teams in South Australia and Victoria. 
  • Review engineering outputs to ensure that they are delivered in accordance with engineering principles and standards. 
  • Provide leadership to foster innovation and to inspire and develop the team. 
  • Work with the Research Engineering Principal Engineers to plan and deliver the relevant Engineering Authorities to the team. 
  • Lead the interaction with other Research Engineering Group, Discipline and Section Leaders when required. 
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with key stakeholders including the Australian Defence Force (ADF), the Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator (ASCA), the Naval Shipbuilding and Sustainment Group (NSSG) and Industry.
  • Ensure all Engineering activities are conducted in accordance with relevant Work Health and Safety instructions. 
  • Operate in accordance with Research Engineering’s Quality Management System. 
  • Work with the Group Leader Research Engineering Operations and Program Manager to oversee the program of work. 
  • Be a member of the Research Engineering Leadership Team. 
  • Manage the Discipline’s annual budget to deliver the engineering capability. 
  • Provide support to the Research Engineering Program Leader and Group Leaders with senior visits to New South Wales.
